Top 6 approach to Job Search in Canada

It ain’t easy to find a job in Canada without the right job searching strategies. One has to make wise choices and moves.

So, what is a right job searching approach?

Honestly, it cannot be pre-defined. It differs with situations, opportunities available and also the comfort of a person. But let me share the most popularly used ones below:

1.Networking

Networking holds the first place when it comes to finding a job in Canada because it’s said that only 25% of the jobs are advertised publicly while the rest are filled through internal references. So, now you know why networking is super important. Dig out your old contacts, make new ones, go for social or community gatherings, attend job fairs, connect with people via LinkedIn and make friends with friend-of-your-friend if that helps. It is important to come out of your introvert shell, otherwise, someone else is gonna grab the job you aimed for.

2.Company transfer

This is a great opportunity for those working in international companies in their home country. Find out if you have an office in Canada and if yes, then bring out your sweet side, talk to your manager or others higher up and convince them for a transfer. It is the safest best.

3.Recruiting Agencies

There are numerous recruiting agencies in Canada. Some of them are government-funded like JVS, ACCESS, YMCA, PCPI while some are private agencies like Ranstad, AeroTek, Hays, SI systems, Robert Half, Altis, etc. They work directly for the employer and helps you find a job without any cost. The employer pays them. Working through an agency gives better access to your resume to the employer’s desk.

4.Applying through company websites

Make a list of all the companies that have a job role suitable for you. Modify your resume to suit their job role and send it out with an appealing cover letter to the e-mail provided in the career section or submit it as requested by them. This is a better way of applying for jobs than through a common online portal.

5.Job fairs

Job fairs are a good event for creating networks and connections, but generally, it does not help those aiming for managerial or other such professional roles. Most job fairs are for entry-level positions. But keep a watch you never know when one pops up that suits you. “Eventbrite” hosts a lot of them, so you may check out their page.

6.Online job search portals

Everyone knows about them. They are of course, the Indeed.ca, Monster.ca, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, Workopolis, etc. One of the disadvantages I felt with these sites is that only a few percentages of the actual job pool get advertised in them and since the number of applicants is in hundreds, your resume can go unnoticed easily.

???Now what is the most important rule while sending out your resume???

Always, I repeat, always tailor your resume to match the job description for the particular job role you are applying. Do not send out the same resume for every job. Because in Canada, the preliminary screening is mostly done by bots, and they are fed with keywords from the job description. So, unless it’s a match, your resume will be discarded even before it reaches the HR department.

That’s all folks!! All the best in your job search.

But i don’t know what should be done inorder to get PR .but i realised that it would be difficult for me to get a job there as i don’t have any work experience. I know i have to write IELTS first and i have no idea what all has to be done inorder to find a job abroad. I have done Masters in Mathematics.

    1. Hi Ramya,
It is very difficult to find a job in Canada from abroad. Because for any company to recruit a person from abroad, for any job, they need to prove to the government that there is no suitable person currently available in here(Canada) suitable for that job role. Only then they will be approved.
The most straightforward method is to get a PR or study permit.

      Thank you
