Landing in Canada – Experience of a New PR

Hi folks,

So, yeah, happy to let you all know that finally I have set my foot in Canada as a Permanent Resident….. yipeeeeeeeeee!!!!!

The landing experience was smooth and easy.

Must say! the officials in Canada are extremely friendly and helpful and welcoming, of-course.

Without much intro, let me walk you through my experience:

I flew via Air Canada: Delhi-Toronto direct flight (phew….the flying time was long, but bearable if you are a “on-flight sleeper”…lol)

As you approach landing, you will be given a customs declaration card in flight, where you need to declare about the possession of any ‘mentioned’ goods or money more than 10000 CAD

We arrived at the Toronto Pearson Airport at 05:30 in the morning.

Once you land in the airport of Canada,

¤ First, there will be an identity verification at the flight exit by the airport officials. They will ask for your passport and your reason to visit Canada.

When you say, you’ve landed as PR, they say WELCOME TO CANADA (it indeed gave a warm feeling in the cold morning, 🙂)

¤ Then, move to the immigration desk for arrivals. They will ask for your passportCoPR document well as the customs declaration card.

They will stamp your passport and also cross out the one time visa.

¤ Next, move to the next immigration area to complete rest of the formalities. There the officials ask you for the passport, CoPR and sometimes about the proof of funds as well.

They might ask you a few questions regarding being involved in a crime or related stuff and ask you to wait for a few minutes, so that they can enter you into their system.

Once its done, you will be asked to sign the CoPR and then they will stamp it

YUP!! that’s it.

Your are done with your “Landing paper”(the most important document for as long as you stay in Canada).

The official who attended us told us that he has been working continuously from 16:00 yesterday. But he was still cheerful, and pleasantly greeted and welcomed us to Canada. He even joked to my husband that he won’t stamp the CoPR because my husband likes chocolate ice cream and not vanilla… lol 😛

Trust me!!! you feel the warmth when you step your foot into Canada.

¤ Once its done, Services Canada volunteers will guide you to their counter, where you can get your “SIN- Social Insurance Number”(the next very important thing required as long as you are in Canada).

¤ Next, you may walk to the luggage counter and find yours.

¤ After that, go to the Customs Desk and submit your goods accompanying and goods to follow list (if any).

Get them stamped by the officer.

Collect a payment receipt of zero dollar from the counter and keep the receipt as well as a copy of the list with you.

*Once stamped, ‘Goods to follow list’ allows you to bring all the goods mentioned in it to Canada without paying customs-duty, any day.

Preparing the goods accompanying and goods to follow list:

Download the form B4 from official website and fill in.

Alternatively, you may attach a print out of the excel sheet in which you have prepared the list.

While preparing the list, group the items, for example: clothings, books, kitchen utensils etc and give an approximate value in CAD.

For electronic items like laptop, mobile phone etc, include the serial number as well.

Follow the same for goods-to-follow list.

If you are planning to bring jewellery, then take their individual photos, get them estimated by a jeweller for their gram weight and value in INR ( which you can later convert to CAD). And attach this to the form B4.

Note: Always take two copies of both list – one to submit and one to keep!!

So, that’s it….all done!!!!

Now you may walk free into the soil of CANADA….. 🙂

Thank you for reading,

And watch out this space for more stories on my experience in Canada as a New PR.

Regards,

DrNeethi.
